Adam Orth leaves Microsoft over Twitter fallout

What started out as a bit of banter with a friend has resulted in Adam Orth’s resignation from Microsoft. Orth, who caused a public outcry last week with his remarks about the “always online DRM Durango”, has left the company voluntarily after causing the corporation some deep embarrassment over the twitter fiasco.

Unfortunately for Orth, a personal conversation with his long time friend Manveer Heir, a senior game designer at Bioware, was taken out of context resulting in messages from thousands of outraged fans. It’s also been reported that Orth has received death threats from several people who felt insulted or angered by his comments.

Microsoft was quick to disavow Orth’s comments when they went public with a statement:

“We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers. We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter.”

While this development came from a simple misunderstanding, one cannot help but remember the disaster Penny Arcade unveiled about Ocean Marketing back in 2011. For anyone who does not remember, here is the link. Just another example of how something that starts out as an innocent discussion can snowball into a huge controversy.
