Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time Review

Doc Clock: TTSoT is a platform puzzler that requires you to create vehicles to traverse the land. Released on the Wii and PC over a year ago, will it sit well on the PSN?

The story is as mad as the title itself. Doc Clock is an inventor who likes to create crazy contraptions. In his attempt to create a sandwich toaster, he accidently turned his cat into a cactus plant. So what do you do in the advent of turning your cat into a cactus plant?  Make a time machine to go back in time to prevent it from happening of course!

Instead of going back in time, Doc Clock ends up going 2000 years into the future. If that wasn’t enough bad luck, human-hating robots have taken over.  However, it doesn’t stop there. Parts of the time machine have been scattered over the land and is now in the hands of the robots. Your mission is to travel the land and reclaim the parts of the time machine so you can go back to the time you came from. Your only company is a cynical, robotic back-pack who shows complete disregard to you and your well-being.  Your back pack does have its uses though as you use him to collect any objects.

Each level starts with the basic parts to make a vehicle. You have to pick up objects and attach them in the way you like. Basic vehicles usually consist of 2 wheels, a seat and an object like a fridge (yes a fridge) to be the base. As you progress you’ll receive or collect other objects that’ll enhance your vehicle. Propellers will give your vehicle lift while umbrellas will bring you down from high places. Once you piece together your vehicle, you’re ready to go!

To make it to the end of each level and to another piece of your time machine, you have to dodge and destroy maniac robots, leap over spikes and lava, and glide down safely from high ledges. The key to get you to the end is setting up and using the right equipment. Also, it rewards you to explore your environments. Any equipment like propellers and springs that are collected can be used in later levels and can make life a lot easier. There’s also these secret toasted sandwhiches to find which can be quite challenging. There is no need to worry about dying, if you make a mistake you can press R2 to rewind back time to a safe spot.

The concept of the game is fine but the execution is a little disappointing. The back and forth conversations between Doc Clock and his back-pack are supposed to be funny but most of the time it’s more miss than hit. Construction of the vehicles can be fiddly with wheels rolling about as you try to place bits onto them. Most levels are similar and you end up constructing the vehicle almost identical to previous levels. The whole game just lacks polish.

Although with these problems it is still a half decent game and you’ll have some fun. You’ll smile when you construct your first vehicle and you’ll be tempted into exploring the worlds to find the special items and the secret toasted sandwiches that are scattered about. Just be prepared to expect a bit of repetition.
