Mortal Kombat and Street fighter have been going at it since the SNES and Genesis days. You bought a SNES for Street Fighter 2 and you bought the Genesis for the blood effect in Mortal Kombat. Back then Nintendo was the clear victor in the Console war. But which Fighting series has prevailed over the years? Look below to find the answer!

Finish Him!

According to known estimates the Mortal Kombat series is ahead of the Street Fighter series in sales. At this point in time the Mortal Kombat series of games stands at a mighty 31.10 million copies sold. Mortal Kombat was last seen on the Playstation Vita where it has sold approximately 80,000 copies to date. The top selling Mortal Kombat game of all time may surprise you! It is not the original 1992 Genesis classic, but the 1996 PS bundle, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, with 2.79 million copies sold.

The Street Fighter series is at a close second with 30.39 million units sold. The last time that we have seen this series was earlier this year with Street Fighter X Tekken. This game was released on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. At this time the game has sold around 670,000 copies. The top selling Street fighter game of all time, of course goes to the SNES title, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, with 6.3 million copies sold World wide since it’s release in 1992.

Street Fighter has a chance to take back the lead later this year as Capcom is expected to release the PSV version of Street Fighter X Tekken.

As for Top fighter Franchise of all time? That accolade goes to the Tekken series. It has been able to push out a very impressive 35.33 million copies!

(Edit) Streets of Rage and Death by Degrees are not part of the Tekken series, and have been removed from the article.

Had no idea the best selling game in MK series was the PS one. I always thought it was MK II – or MK III.
Still, the best selling SF far surpasses the best selling MK. Well, not really sure of what version it was, but SF2 was bundled with SNES.

    Tekken really is big!

    Good article!

Any way you can get a quarter count for the machines? I bet Street Fighter would edge into first, it was very popular in the arcades for a longer period of time than MK.

I researched a bit. Did not see anything else that I could use. From the links that I provided that is the best information that I was able to find on it. If anyone else has any sources that would be great!
